Thank you for stopping by. You might be wondering about the name, The Hillbilly Bougie. I was born and raised in Bakersfield, California. I grew up on an orange ranch; my dad was a farmer whose dad was a farmer, whose dad was a farmer. My mom was raised by Dust Bowl immigrants; her father was a migrant farm worker who worked on oil rigs in Texas. Grandpa Rufus had a twin brother who fell from a rig and was killed. He then traveled to Kern County, where he became a foreman working the fields. Both my grandmas sewed. Grandma G. sewed clothing for her family, made dish towels, pillowcases, and home items. Grandmother H. worked the fields with her husband, picking cotton and potatoes. Later, she cleaned banks and finally had a custom drapery business.
I come from people who didn’t waste anything. I’m sure a lot of that had to do with the Great Depression. Anyway, back to the name The Hillbilly Bougie: the hillbilly part comes from my mom’s side and, to us, it is not derogatory. Sometimes it was actually used as a point of pride. Interestingly enough, my dad’s side was a bit more bougie, although not as bougie as me. They were farm and landowners who hired migrant workers. If you have ever read The Grapes of Wrath, both sides of my family are represented. The common denominator between both families was “waste not, want not,” which is one reason why I like working with leather: it is durable, gets better with age, and lasts a long time.
My candle has been custom-made just for me by WildBloomsandBliss.com. I personally curated the scent with Brandy's help. It is fresh, clean, and not very girly, so it is suitable for men as well. It is totally clean and nontoxic. The Ranch has a leather and orange profile and reminds me of growing up on the orange ranch. It is featured in a reusable (see? waste not, want not), double old-fashioned whiskey glass etched with The Hillbilly Bougie. The candle would go perfectly with some of the leather cigar accessories.
I am also embarking on a mentorship with Kristen from The Sandal School, learning how to make custom, personally-fitted-to-you Italian leather sandals from the Amalfi Coast in Italy, but made in America.
Please look around my website. It’s a work in progress and will always be changing as I add new items.
